example on using client javascript

Hi,
All this time I do the validation in the server, event if just to check the length of the string entered and compared to other string on the other field (like password validation), and I notice that it took quite sometime to do it. I think it would be much faster if I can do it in the client (at least that what I experience in the other web application development).
But seems the client script that I tried to execute is not executed at all. Is there any examples in doing what I am trying to accomplished?
