I've tried using version 5.8 and 5.9 of the Studio and neither one of them are what I would consider functional. They installed fine, but 5.8 would never actually fully start. I would have to end task. 5.9 is a little better. It starts, but become unresponsive. I've tried the installation on two different virtual machines. Both these machines are running 5.3 and 5.6 without one single issue, so I can't blame the environment.
It takes several minutes to open, switch workspaces, and I can't get it to exit either. File Exit and the Close X in the corner does not close the designer.
Is there something I'm missing?

That sounds like a memory issue. How much RAM do you have on the computer that you are running Designer on ?
