Check when a particular field receives the focus

We would find it useful to be able to tell when a particular field receives the focus.
Example application: we're looking at creating a date entry control for values that are remote from the current date (i.e. where the standard calendar control, defaulting to today's date, is not appropriate). One option that we have considered is to create a component that includes separate day, month and year fields. I would like to be able to populate the three fields with 'DD', 'MM' and 'YYYY' to make their function explicit without having to display a separate label for each field, and have them automatically blanked when the user tabs or clicks into the field to edit it.
